Welcome to the exciting art of copper repoussé.
Each copper artwork by Kanella (Kandy) Otto is developed through a multi-step creative process. The French call this process repoussé. She begins by drawing designs directly into copper sheets and utilizing natural patinas to emphasize shapes through chemical reactions. Textures are added and the piece is transformed into a multi-colored palette using oil glazes applied with brush work. Layered colors combine with the natural and patinaed copper to create that “pop” that is particularly responsive to light. In the final step, special areas of copper are emphasized in each composition and varnish is applied to prevent oxidation. This is an important step in retaining the copper intensity, and amplifying the colored glazing.
